    1.

    Log off and turn off the computers.

    2.

    Obtain a hub. Connect each network computer to a hub= . You are not going to connect this hub to one of our routers. We want just a simple peer to peer network.

    3.

    Turn the computers back on and log in locally.

    4.

    Change the computers from working within a domain in= to a workgroup. Each computer must have a unique computer name, but the workgr= oup names should all be netplus.=

    In my network places, view entire network. Find the Netplus workgroup and double click.

    Lab 3-3 Building a Daisy Chain

     

    Together you’re going to build a daisy chain net= work. A daisy chain is a series of linked devices, one device to the next. ItR= 17;s cheap to set up and easy to maintain, but can get wieldy as the network gro= ws.

     

    Get the following:

    8&nb= sp;     Two or three simple hubs

    8&nb= sp;     Cables

    o      =   Regular Cables

    o      =   Crossover Cables

    o      =   Don’t have cables? Make them!

    8&nb= sp;     Three or four computers

    8&nb= sp;     Throw the computers into a workgroup named Netplus.

     

    1.

    Turn everything off.

    2.

    Connect the computers to the hubs using regular cabl= es.

    3.

    Connect the hubs to the hubs using crossover cables.=

    4.

    Why use crossover cables to connect hubs?

    Make sure you have at least one computer on each hub= .

    Log into the computers as administrators.

    Lab 3-4 Using Network Monitor

     

    On this lab you’re going to use a Windows 2003 S= erver computer (or Windows 2000) to take a peek at some data packets. Windows com= es with some built in and extra programs that you can use to monitor different types of network performance.

     

    Get the following:

    8&nb= sp;     A computer running Windows 2003 Server with Active Directory installed

    8&nb= sp;     A workstation connected to server’s do= main

    8&nb= sp;     A crossover cable or hub and cables to conne= ct the two computers together

    8&nb= sp;     Windows Server 2003 disk

     

    1.

    Log onto your server as an administrator.

    2.

    Open the administrative tools and run Network Monito= r. If it is not installed, you will need to install it.

    3.

    Select the default network (yours).

    4.

    Click the capture button and then click star. The pr= ogram will start capturing data.

    5.

    On with workstation computer, log in as administrato= r. Double click on my network places. View entire network and locate your domain.

    6.

    Find the server and poke around in it. Keep doing th= is for about a minute. You may need to share a folder on the server so that you = can save some items into that folder from the workstation. (Make sure the administrator has those rights.)

    7.

    Back on the server, click capture then click stop.

    8.

    Click capture then click Display Captured Data. The summary window will appear showing information on captured data packets. Pretty snifty, huh?

     

    9.

    Locate and double click on either an SMB (server mes= sage blocks) or SAP (service advertising protocol) entry and a window looking a little something like this will come up:

    In the middle of the pane you will see a line or ser= ies of plus (+) signs. Double click the + sign next to the word Ethernet. Information about the Ethernet portion of the packet will display.
