Lab 5-4 Creating a Bootable USB for installing Windows

When you are done with this lab, your team should have THREE USB DRIVES that are representative of the three labs where we created specialty drives. Do NOT format over your other two drives. You will need those for the lab test.

It used to be you could create Windows Boot Floppies up through Windows 2000. Unfortunately since then, Windows installs only from a CD.

But what if you have a netbook? What if you have a netbook and NO EXTERNAL CD DRIVE? And what if that netbook has a horrible OS on it, or it becomes corrupted and you can’t get it to reinstall?

That’s where you can use:

  1. A USB drive formatted with the startup files for installing newer versions of Windows.
  2. An image on a Windows installation.
  3. Go online and follow the direction for creating a boot USB that will allow you to install Windows. There are a variety of resources, including one from a previous lab.
