Windows Update Catalog
Sometimes
Windows Update won’t work for some reason. Often this indicates an operating
system malfunction that can be fixed by applying a service pack (a collection
of Windows Updates packaged together). The problem is,
if you can’t run Windows Update, you often can’t apply the service pack!
When
this happens your best bet is to go through Windows Update Catalog and download
updates individually then run the executables individually.
- Go to http://update.microsoft.com
- Click on the link that
says Use Administrator Options.
- Click Search the Microsoft Download Center.
- At the bottom you’ll
see download categories. Let’s look to see if we can find any updates for
an Intellitype Pro Keyboard driver.
- Locate the driver and
download it.
- Do not install it,
just save the file to show me.
- Now go back and
download the following update: Internet Explorer Service Pack 1.
- After downloading the
file and running the executable, where is the file stored?

Repeat the same
with VISTA
- What do you see in
the Start Menu that’s different in Vista?
- Are the updates
different?
- Why or why not?
- Update Vista…what service pack are you on?
